On a day later during the 3rd Round of the Final Four, Team Nitrous Express (Burton Center for Arts and Technology) shattered the Record of 17:55 set just the day before. They ran a perfect run with a time of 16:22 which clinched the 2014 National Championship with this amazing run! Congratulations to Team Nitrous Express we are proud of you!

It may have been a short lived Record, but Peach County High School (Team Fel Pro) from Fort Valley, GA broke the previous National Record at PRI Show on 12/12/14. The ran an amazing 17:55 in their final build of the 2014 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Dual Championship. The incredible thing about this team is they are all just Sophomores! We expect to see more great things to come from these Students!

We had the National Speed Record broken 3 times over the Dual Championship Series in 2014. The first one to break the record was Team Autometer from Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center in Choctaw, OK at the SEMA Show on 11/05/14. We are so proud of how fast and accurate all these teams are getting year after year!

THE HOT RODDERS OF TOMORROW
2014 NATIONAL CHAMPION IS...

Burton Center for Arts and Technology from Virginia (Team Nitrous Express) claimed the National Championship with an astonishing 18 minute, 6 second average time, and a new single-round record of 16 minutes, 22 seconds.

The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow (HROT) Engine Challenge upped the ante on excitement this year by creating a dual championship format that pitted the two top teams determined at the SEMA Show against the top two finishers here at the PRI Trade Show.

Wrapping up three days of intense competition on the Show floor, the final four went head-to-head on Saturday afternoon to determine the National Championship.

One of the most popular events at PRI the past two years, the Engine Challenge drew an even bigger crowd than usual as the Derale-, Autometer-, Nitrous Express- and Moroso-sponsored teams faced off in the final. When the dust settled, Burton Center for Arts and Technology from Virginia (Team Nitrous Express) came out in the top spot, with an astonishing 18 minute, 6 second average time, and a new single-round national record of 16 minutes, 22 seconds.

“It’s amazing,” said co-founder Rodney Bingham. “Our first year, the winning average was 43 minutes, so who knows how low it will go from here?”

Created by Jim Bingham and son Rodney, the nonprofit organization was established as a way to help high school and trade school students develop an interest and ultimately pursue careers in the automotive field. HROT started out with just five teams in 2008, and is now up to 110, including some 770 dedicated young men and women from across the country.

Teams work and compete year-round under the tutelage of adult coaches, and train countless hours in order to gain both speed and accuracy in tearing down and then rebuilding a race engine. Scores are based on an average of three builds.

Just 30 seconds behind this year's winner was Georgia’s Forsyth Central High School, sponsored by Derale. Third and fourth positions were rounded out by Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center (Team Autometer) and Georgia’s Thomas County Central High School (Team Moroso).

There are no losers in this contest, however, as all placing competitors receive scholarship money to help them attend the technical school of their choice. Members of the top two teams received a bonus from McLeod Racing this year: a NASCAR Ride Along Experience. In the case of Team Nitrous Express, the kids will actually get to drive.

As for the new dual championship format, it’s a keeper, according to Bingham. “It worked out great,” he said. “The energy and enthusiasm when we got it pared down to the two SEMA versus the two PRI teams was electric. People were just hooting and hollering and just absolutely loved it.”

SEMA SHOW RESULTS

Three Million in Scholarships Available to Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge Students

This year the Sixth Annual Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge Championships are split into a Dual Championship format in which teams will compete at both the SEMA Show (Nov. 4-7, Las Vegas) and the PRI Show (Dec. 11-13, Indianapolis). From each Dual Championship 2 teams will emerge. These four teams will face off for the 2014 Engine Challenge Championship starting on Friday, December 12th  at 5PM, and two additional rounds on Saturday at the 2014 PRI Show.

With the SEMA Show quickly approaching, teams are gearing up for the competition. To have a chance at being a championship finalist, teams will likely need to complete the high performance engine rebuild in less than 20 minutes.

Fifteen teams will compete at the SEMA Show beginning with the first heat on Tuesday, Nov. 4. Heats continue through Wednesday and Thursday. Each team will compete a total of 4 times with their slowest time being thrown out, and the other three runs averaged together. The top two teams with the best average times will move on to PRI Show to compete against the top two teams from PRI.

“The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge is a great program fueled by the young men and woman that compete in it,” SEMA’s Zane Clark, elaborated. As the Director of Education he is looking forward to the Dual Championship being a part of the SEMA Show. “The new format of having the SEMA Show Champions compete again at the PRI Show against their Champs will be very exciting and showcase the tremendous skills of the these young builders, while offering a rewarding end to their hard work and dedication. The industry supported scholarships are a tremendous incentive for the qualifying participants and helps to offset the expenses of pursuing a career in the automotive industry.”

“Ohio Technical College is proud to have been a sponsor of the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge since the first competition at SEMA,” OTC’s Director of Enrollment Management, Tom King said. “It’s a great opportunity to see young people learning and working as a team to prove themselves and we are excited to provide scholarship opportunities to these students again this year.”

Three million dollars in scholarship money is available to the 34 teams competing in the Dual Championship thanks to Hot Rodders of Tomorrow partners Ohio Technical College (OTC), School of Automotive Machinist (SAM) and the University of Northwest Ohio (UNOH).

“The University of Northwestern Ohio is proud to be an active sponsor of the Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow Competition at the 2014 SEMA Show,” added UNOH’s Donald Lowden. “We are offering scholarships to the talented students who place in the competition to help further their education in High Performance Technology. Good luck to all the participants.”

Each member of the winning team will receive $10,000 in scholarship opportunities from each college partners.

“The School of Automotive Machinists is happy to support high school students who are excited about the automotive industry” said Kim Klevenhagen, Director of Development at SAM. “We hope these students will continue their automotive training and go on to work in the motorsport industry.”

Press Release July 24, 2014

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Completes Sixth Regular Season of Inspiring Young Automotive Enthusiasts

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow is a powerful tool in shaping the next generation of car enthusiasts. This nonprofit organization hosts “Engine Challenges” across the country in which high school teams compete against each other in complete engine rebuilds. With their sixth regular season under their belts, Hot Rodders of Tomorrow has impacted over 3,114 students, encouraging their automotive passion and skill.

"Growing up in this industry in a family business in the 1970's, I have been disappointed by the lack of the ‘next generation’ getting excited about our industry,” expressed John DeBlaso, Vice President of Purchasing for AAM. “Of course there is much more to occupy young folks attentions today than we had 30-40 years ago. The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow program is just what we need to help promote our industry and fuel a passion for the next generation of ‘car guys and gals’. If you have not witnessed one of these events, do it, to see the passion and the teamwork there."

In 2014, ten events across the country featured 110 teams - including three all-female teams - made up of 770 students. These teams compete during the regular season in efforts to reach the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Championship. In an inaugural dual championship format, qualifying teams will face off at one of the two top industry trade shows, SEMA or PRI. The top two teams from SEMA will take on the top two teams from PRI in the finale to crown the 2014 Engine Challenge Champion. Zane Clark, SEMA Director of Education, believes that the dual championship format will bring out the best in Engine Challenge competition:

“The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge is a great program fueled by the young men and woman that compete in it,” stated Clark. “The dual championship will be great for the competition. This is their moment, their Superbowl.  The new format of having the SEMA Show Champions compete again at the PRI Show against their Champs will be very exciting and showcase the tremendous skills of the these young builders, while offering a rewarding end to their hard work and dedication.”

http://www.sema.org/system/files/images/derale.jpgIn order to qualify for the dual championship, teams must perform a complete engine rebuild in under 35 minutes including penalties. Over 29 teams have qualified for championship competition. Top-qualifying Team Derale was from Forsyth Central High School in Cumming, Ga. They completed their rebuild in an incredible 19 minutes and 10 seconds at the Georgia Event in Atlanta, GA. Just behind them at 19:27, Team Fel-Pro from Peach County High School made their qualifying run at the CTA Expo in Hendersonville, TN. Both of these teams have chosen to compete at the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show, December 11-13 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Team Proform (East Ridge High School), Team Moroso (Thomas County Central High School), and Team Autometer (Eastern Oklahoma County Tech Center) round out the top five of qualifying teams. Each of these teams will compete at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, November 3-7 in Las Vegas, Nev.

One of the three female teams, Team Royal Purple, completed their rebuild in 27 minutes and 10 seconds and will compete in the championship at the Specialty Equipment Market Association Show, November 3-7 in Las Vegas, Nev.

Coach Jim LaFevers, who coached the 2013 National Championship Team reflected on the competition growth, “Who would have thought that the level of competition just a short six years ago would have ever been this tight or this competitive.  Six years ago 47 minutes wins the national title.  Today you don't even qualify unless you are in the low 30's.  And, for National Title hopes you better be in the low 20's or high teens because seconds will separate the top eight teams.  Oh yes, did I mention these are high school students and not professionals- yet!

#9 Ranked Team Comp Cams from Joliet Central High School in Joliet, IL has selected The SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV!
Rounding out the Top 8 is Team Weld Racing from Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, MI, and they will be attending the SEMA Show in Las Vegas, NV!

IN MEMORY OF
Jim Puracchio
February 11, 1954 - May 5, 2014

Mr. James "Jim" Thomas Puracchio, son of Dorothy Puracchio and the late Thomas Puracchio, passed away on Sunday, May 18, 2014 in Campbellsville, KY. He was 60 years, 3 months, and 7 days of age. Mr. Puracchio was an accomplished high-performance mechanic, having worked on several professional teams and winning numerous awards throughout his lifetime. Some claimed he could even rebuild a racing transmission blindfolded. He was the owner of Jim's Performance in Campbellsville, KY, but he often felt that his biggest contribution to the sport he loved (drag racing) was in the work he did for the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge, a non-profit which has raised over 6 1/2 million dollars in college scholarship money.

14 Teams Qualify for Finals....Already!

After only three events for the 2013 season, Hot Rodders of Tomorrow has had 14 High School Auto-Tec teams qualify for the finals at the PRI show Starting Wednesday Dec. 11th  through Saturday Dec. 14th in Indianapolis.

For the 2013 season, the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow competition committee changed the qualification rules.  In the past only the lowest timed team at an event would qualify and selected runners up would be used to complete the playoff competition. Therefore limiting the High Schools that were able to participate. Actually, preventing some very good teams from experiencing the thrill of the competition on its highest stage.

The committee wanted a true race against the clock competition.  So for the 2013 season any High School Auto-Tec Team that is timed at 35 minutes or less will automatically qualify for the finals. Therefore increasing the total count of schools that will qualify and give many more students the great experience and rewards available at the finals at the PRI Show.

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow is dedicated to giving the youth in our industry an opportunity to further their education. With the help of industry sponsors and the participating Colleges that are giving scholarships we hope to reach and keep the youth involved in the industry.

Following are the 14 qualifying teams after the first three competitions:

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow adds 2nd California Event in 2013

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow is excited to announce the addition of a 2nd California Event to their schedule in 2013 with a partnership with Goodguys Rod & Custom Association. The new location will be held at Pleasanton, CA @ The Goodguys 20th Summer Get-Together. This addition will bring the total number of events on the Hot Rodders Schedule to 8 in 2013, and ending in the new home for the HROT Championship @ The PRI Show in Indianapolis, IN in December.

This expansion in California was made possible because of the addition of a second Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Trailer donated by long time supporter Vic Edelbrock and Edelbrock LLC, and the addition of our new West Coast Operation Manager and Former 3 Time HROT Champion Russ Bacarella. Russ is a former instructor with Loara High School who has won the last 3 Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Championships, and will now lend his knowledge and expertise to help all the West Coast Teams achieve the same success he has enjoyed the last four years.

Hot Rodders of Tomorrow is a High School Engine Building Competition where a team of 5 Students are timed and judged disassembling and reassembling a Small Block Chevy Engine. If the team completes tear down and rebuild in 35 Minutes or less then they qualify to compete at The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Championship in Indianapolis, IN.

Team Parts Pro captures first place at the 6th Annual Race and Performance Expo!

Team Parts Pro

The final ranking for the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Engine Challenge (HROT) at the 6th Annual Race and Performance Expo in Illinois this weekend are in!  Team Parts Pro from Thomas County Central High School from Georgia won with a remarkable time of 23 minutes and 38 seconds!  The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow (HROT) pits high school auto shops against each other disassembling and reassembling a Chevy V8 motor for the best time, to win trophies and scholarships.  Each team had five students who practice for the competition as hard as any normal High School sport.

This year’s HROT season starter was held at the Feb 23-24 at the 6th Annual Race and Performance Expo in St. Charles, IL.  RP Expo has hosted HROT for six years now, and keeps expanding the amount of Teams each year. This year there were 24 Teams attempting to qualify with a time of 35 Minutes or faster to earn a spot at the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow National Championship at the 26th Annual PRI Show in Indianapolis, IN. 8 of 24 Schools qualified for the Championship which will be this December 12th – 14th 2013. Tim Odom President of Parts Pro a sponsor HROT was in attendance to watch his Team win first place at the RP Expo.

It is hard to image the team coordination and concentrated speed of action needed to accomplish this feat in under 35 minutes.  (Please click the line at the end of this Press Release to see a YouTube video of an event similar to this last weekend.)  Those experienced in the automotive hobbies and industries marvel as they know the complications that arise when working with these often demanding machines.

The Race and Performance Expo has hosted HROT for the last six years and had grown to be one of the many great attractions at the show.  Regular attendees are encouraged by the Challenge as it is a clear avenue to recruit young talent into the high performance aftermarket industry.  The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow is reversing the trend of High School Automotive Programs being cut from curriculums by helping them improve their enrollment.

The next HROT event is at the Skills USA Georgia demonstrations March 21-22 at the International Convention Center on Atlanta.
